To commemorate the "International Year of Sanitation – 2008", WES-Net India with the support of Plan India, Water Aid, UNICEF and the Department for Drinking Water Supply, Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India, aimed to promote mass awareness and also raise the profile of sanitation among the general public, professionals and policy makers through the mainstream media by involving photographers in the Clean-India contest.
The Clean India
Photo Contest 2008, therefore,
invited Photo Journalists in India to publish
incisive photo stories on sanitation in
newspapers and magazine during the World
Water Week (20-28 March 08). The photo journalists
who sent in their entries were encouraged
to capture several themes related to Sanitary
Facilities, Sewerage Systems, Hygiene Behaviour,
River Pollution Issues, Solid Waste Disposal
& Wastewater Management. The published
photographs were judged based on three aspects
that it highlights an important/neglected
issue, creates mass awareness among public
and others & promotes best practices.
The photo contest, while
encouraging photojournalists to take part
in the contest for raising awareness among
the general public, has successfully drawn
the attention of numerous journalists and
the media to realize sanitation as an important
issue that needs greater attention and focus.
The contest also highlights the importance
of engaging the media for promoting sanitation
which is more about changing the mindset
of people rather than building infrastructure
alone.
